First Scholarships from Scotiabank Scholars Program Awarded to Five London Students

LONDON, ON – Huron University and Scotiabank are proud the announce the inaugural recipients of scholarships from the Scotiabank Scholars program.

The Scotiabank Scholars program is a joint initiative between Scotiabank and Huron University to create pathways to post-secondary education for high school students and a community where young leaders can thrive academically, professionally and socially. The program is also part of ScotiaRISE, Scotiabank’s 10-year $500 million initiative that aims to promote economic resilience. The five recipients officially received their full scholarship to Huron University starting in September 2022 at a celebration at Huron in June.

The 2022 Scotiabank Scholars recipients are:

  • Maryam Abouelela – Saunders Secondary School
  • Saw Samuel (Sam) Sinphu Gay – Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School
  • David King – A.B. Lucas Secondary School
  • Amaya Lezama – School Within A University (SWAU)
  • Obey Mzemba – Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School

“We are incredibly proud of all that this group of students have accomplished in high school so far, and cannot wait to welcome them to Huron this Fall,” said Dr. Barry Craig, President and Vice-Chancellor of Huron University. “Education has the power to change lives and transform communities. I know that this group of students are going to use their education to make their mark on the world.”

The Scotiabank Scholars program is uniquely designed to help high-school students get exposure to and confidence in attending post-secondary environment. Programming covers topics like university preparation and career development.

“Making higher education more accessible to students is a key goal for Scotiabank,” said Victor Zamin, District Vice President, London & Area with Scotiabank. “By creating a vibrant community of Scotiabank Scholars we can ensure students are supported in their academic pursuits by their teachers, professors, peers and partners.”

All five scholarship recipients for 2022 attend high school in Thames Valley District School Board, a key partner for Huron and Scotiabank in the foundational year of the new program.

“TVDSB has been thrilled to work with Huron and Scotiabank over the past year in order to launch this initiative in our schools,” said Mark Fisher, Director of Education for Thames Valley District School Board. “Our students have worked incredibly hard over the past year, demonstrating their commitment to their education, their communities and betting the world. We wish them all the success in their post-secondary careers, and look forward to continuing with the Scotiabank Scholars program.”

The Scotiabank Scholars program was launched in November 2021, providing both virtual and in-class learning opportunities to students in the TVDSB. Starting in September 2022, Scotiabank Scholars programming will be available to school boards across Ontario and Canada.
