Today, Huron will celebrate its 155th Founder’s Day, marking the day Huron was founded in 1863.

During today’s celebration, Huron will also recognize three alumni who exemplify what it means to be true Leader with Hearts and members of the Huron community.

Melinda Rogers, Honorary Doctor of Divinity Recipient

Huron presents alumna Melinda Rogers, Deputy Chair of Rogers Communications Inc., with an Honorary Doctor of Divinity.

Our university is proud to celebrate a business and community leader who embodies the admirable qualities Huron hopes to inspire in its students.

Melinda, who holds a BA from Huron, is Deputy Chair of the Board of Rogers Communications Inc. She is the Vice Chair of the Rogers Control Trust and founder of Rogers Venture Partners. She spent 15 years in management roles at Rogers Communications, including Senior Vice President of Strategy and Development.

In her role as SVP, Strategy, Melinda was recognized for her ability to engage stakeholders within previously untapped markets in order to lead her group towards profitable growth. Her ingenuity and diligence positioned the company for success, which Rogers continues to build upon by furthering her innovative approaches to business development.

Melinda has served as a board member and advisor for a number of organizations. Currently, she is the Chair of the Jays Care Foundation – the award winning philanthropic and charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club. Annually, Jays Care positively affects the lives of more than 65,000 young people who are facing various barriers to access, with regards to their life-enriching participation in sports and active play.

In addition to lending her charismatic leadership style to these organizations, Melinda is also active directly in charitable giving. She supports a number of charities across Canada and the U.S. – the majority of which directly contribute to improving the health, wellness and education of young people and those at risk of being underserved due to their socioeconomic circumstances.

We are privileged to call Melinda one of our own, and we are delighted to present her with the Honorary Doctor of Divinity in celebration of her dedication to Leading with Heart in all she does.

In addition to presenting Ms. Rogers with an honorary Doctor of Divinity, Huron will also present two alumni awards.

Jane Caskey

Jane Caskey, Alumni Award of Distinction Recipient

Huron is proud to recognize Jane Caskey with the Alumni Award of Distinction for her significant personal and professional achievements. Jane is a Partner and Global Head of Risk Advisory at Norton Rose Canada LLP.

Jane works with clients to identify, mitigate, and manage key risks across their businesses in a holistic and strategic manner, across business units and geographies, which includes analyzing the current and emerging risks within the context of the commercial goals of her clients and their risk culture and appetite.

Jane’s background is intellectual property law, and she has extensive experience with financial institutions and their digital transformation and IP rights, and related cyber and digital risks.

Jane has been the recipient of numerous awards, including being named one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women and earning a spot within the Chambers Global Guide to the World’s Leading Lawyers (Intellectual Property). Even amidst her flourishing career, Jane has never forgotten her Huron roots. She is an avid volunteer and currently sits on the Executive Board, and previously served on the Alumni Board and the Campaign Leadership Team.

We are proud to celebrate Jane’s contributions to Huron, the legal field, and our broader communities.

Chelsea Smith

Chelsea Smith, Young Alumni Award Recipient

Huron is delighted to celebrate Chelsea Smith with this year’s Young Alumni Award. Chelsea Smith, Bilingual class action lawyer at McKenzie Lake LLP

During her time at Huron, Chelsea was very involved in supporting a safe, vibrant and engaging campus environment for her peers. She contributed her time and talents to countless initiatives at Huron, including our Students’ Council, Charities Committee, and Soph Team. Additionally, she was involved in several clubs on Western’s campus and competed nationally in synchronized swimming. Throughout her undergraduate journey, Chelsea secured numerous awards for exceptional achievement.

After graduating from Huron, she went on to complete programs at Western Law and at Université Laval where she obtained four academic awards and three law degrees over the course of four years.

Chelsea currently works as a bilingual class action lawyer at McKenzie Lake LLP where, in recognition of her exceptional performance, she was nominated by her colleagues for the Ontario Bar Association’s Heather McArthur Memorial Young Lawyers Award. In an effort to improve access to justice for French-speaking Canadians, Chelsea also teaches classes to help lawyers enhance their French proficiency.

Huron offers its sincerest congratulations to Chelsea on all her achievements and we look forward to see what else this young alumna will accomplish in the future.
