London, ON – Huron is proud to announce the RBC Foundation has confirmed a new commitment of $200,000, over four years, to help develop the next generation of innovators. This generous gift, which is part of RBC’s Future Launch program, will fund the RBC Community Innovation Bootcamp, which is designed to accelerate students’ understanding of innovation principles while re-imagining solutions to real community problems.

For many students, this will be their first opportunity to get hands-on exposure to foundational innovation methodologies including research, observation, ideation, prototyping and evaluation. In true hackathon form, over the course of one weekend, Huron’s new RBC Community Innovation Bootcamp will empower students to dream up new ideas to address issues faced by non-profit organizations across Southwestern Ontario. Each student will take away an RBC Innovator Certificate to add to their resume, while a pitch competition will determine the $2,500 team prize winner.

Huron University College values its place in an interconnected world and desires to reflect this value, acknowledging our responsibility to strive towards diverse and equitable employment and an educational environment that recognizes the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

“This $200,000 gift from the RBC Foundation will not only enable our students to develop their intellect and skills, but it also provides them with an opportunity to contribute to the broader community,” Huron President, Dr. Barry Craig said. “At Huron, it is partnerships, like this, that contribute to our mission of challenging students to work towards their own academic goals, while equally addressing the needs of the people and community organizations around them.”

RBC Future Launch is RBC’s commitment to empowering Canadian youth for the jobs of tomorrow. RBC is dedicating $500 million, over 10 years, to help young people access meaningful employment through practical work experience, skills development, networking and access to mental well-being supports and services.

“The future of work is evolving every day,” said Jeff Osgarby, Regional Vice-President at RBC. “The jobs that existed 10 years ago won’t necessarily be the ones Canada’s young people will have tomorrow, so embracing an innovation mindset will be a critical component to add to their skillset. We’re excited to be collaborating with Huron University College to help young people build future-ready capabilities and spark meaningful change in our communities.”

Huron will host two three-day Innovation Bootcamps per year - one in the Fall and one during Spring semester - with 30 students per session. All Huron students will be eligible to apply to attend the RBC Community Innovation Bootcamp. However, selection will be determined based on a statement written by student applicants that demonstrates their commitment to developing an innovation mindset as well as their desire to help non-profits in Southwestern Ontario.
