Today, Huron University College is announcing a $60,000 scholarships for any academically eligible students affected by the announcement of the Trump administration to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). Huron University College recognizes this is a small gesture in the face of a terrible injustice. While we, as Canadians, cannot affect this American policy, we can nevertheless stand with those who are victimized by it. Perhaps not many people will take advantage of this offer. But, we ought to do whatever we can when we are faced with actions that contradict our own guiding principles. Huron University College sees this scholarship as a meaningful attempt to assist worthy students victimized by a policy and a situation beyond their control.

At Huron University College, we have embarked on a mission of teaching civic responsibility. We believe our students should care for other people and engage actively in bringing about positive social change. People sometimes are skeptical about universities and their place in society, but we see the importance of universities in leading the search for solutions to the many problems facing society today. Huron is an institution that cares about the world we live in, and this is why we feel it is important to ensure that every student, regardless of race, identity, or background, has an equal opportunity to thrive.
