Huron University Supports Afghan Refugees in Accessing Education

Huron
Oct 14 2021

Huron is pleased to announce the creation of five new scholarships to support Afghan students who were forced to flee their homeland due to the recent insurgence by Taliban forces.

Huron has a long history of supporting refugees, including funding scholarships for students from Syria and those impact by DACA and commitment to the WUSC program. This latest announcement reinforces Huron’s commitment to create more equitable access to post-secondary education and develop Leaders with Heart.

“Huron’s vision is to create a post-secondary landscape where university is accessible to all, and these scholarships are a small step in that direction,” said Dr. Barry Craig, President of Huron. “We know the talent and leadership these students exhibit will be a huge asset to our community. We pledge our support to them and will welcome them to campus with pride.”

The scholarships will cover all costs for the students and are renewable for the entire four years of their undergraduate education at Huron. All other supports will be made available to them when they arrive.

Approximately 20,000 Afghan refugees will soon be calling Canada home and that number will include an unknown number of students whose lives have been upended by violence and conflict.

In 2018, Huron announced the creation of five full scholarships for Syrian refugees. As well, in 2017, the university established a $60,000 scholarship for students negatively impacted by DACA. Huron also has a 23-year history with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC). In 2018, in partnership with WUSC, Huron students voted to increase their student fees in order to fund more scholarship opportunities for students.

Huron challenges our students to become “Leaders with Heart.” It believes that a commitment to caring for others is a responsibility of the entire community and always leads by example.
