LONDON, ON – Recently, Huron celebrated this year’s Scotiabank Scholars Program scholarship recipients.

The Scotiabank Scholars program is a joint initiative between Scotiabank and Huron University to create pathways to post-secondary education for high school students and a community where young leaders can thrive academically, professionally, and socially.

The Scotiabank Scholars Program is part of ScotiaRISE, Scotiabank’s 10-year $500 million initiative that aims to promote economic resilience among underrepresented groups.

Accessibility to higher education for all is a mission that both Huron and Scotiabank share. As part of the Scotiabank Scholars Program, up to five full scholarships at Huron University are awarded to Grade 12 graduates each year.

The 2023 Scotiabank Scholars recipients are:

  • Cassandra Hills-Heath – Arthur Voaden Secondary School
  • Shaine Gandillo – Woodstock Collegiate Institute
  • Fejer Al-Zaidi – School Within a University Program
  • Ethan Foster – Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School
  • Nina Salles – Saunders Secondary School

The Scholars dedicated the past two years to the program, and Huron is thrilled to welcome them to campus in September 2023.

“Receiving the Scotiabank Scholars Scholarship has not only made attending post-secondary possible for me, but the process has taught me the value of being surrounded by a community that is so eager to help others flourish,” says Scotiabank Scholars recipient Nina Salles. “Being awarded the scholarship gave me both the motivation to become a more involved and empathic member of my community, as well as the means to do so by providing me with high quality education. I am so thankful for the opportunities I have been provided with and cannot wait to continue this enriching journey at Huron this fall.” she adds.

Programming designed in collaboration with the Thames Valley District School Board aims to break down barriers to accessing higher education and offers students the opportunity to engage in sessions covering skill development, career exploration, and university preparation.

“The Scotiabank Scholars Program is life-changing for students. The visits to campus and online sessions give students a keen understanding of the resources available to them on campus, and the scholarship opportunities helps reduce stress and increase hope for their futures,” says Angie Roth, guidance counsellor at Saunders Secondary School. “Being a staff advisor for this program has helped me understand the challenges minoritized populations experience throughout their years of formal education and equips to better serve those communities in my role as a guidance counsellor.”

Scotiabank Scholars programming is available to students across Ontario and Canada. Principals, guidance counsellors, and youth leaders are encouraged to visit our website to find more information about the program, eligibility, and the nomination process at
